Mr Stephen Barker was appointed as a consultant in December 1996. He graduated in medicine from St. Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, London and thereafter, undertook training in general and vascular surgery, again at St. Thomas’ Hospital and later, at King’s College Hospital, London and at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia.
He gained interests in aortic surgery, femoro-distal reconstruction (especially for diabetes) and renal access surgery but simultaneously, developed an interest in hernia and ambulatory surgery. In particular, he has pioneered the ‘mesh plug’ repair technique for inguinal hernia.
He has performed in excess of 2500 hernia repairs at the hospital, and has a noted extremely low rate of surgical complications as associated with such surgery.
